Pupil Premium
Background - What is Pupil Premium?
The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main Academy funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals {FSM} and their wealthier peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.
The Pupil Premium is allocated to children from low-income families who are currently known to be eligible for FSM in both mainstream and non-mainstream settings and children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months.
The Government decided that eligibility for the Pupil Premium in 2012-13 would be extended to pupils who have been elgible for free school meals {FSM} at any point in the last 6 years. As a group nationally, children who have been eligible for FSM at any point in time have consistently lower educational attainment than those who have never been eligible for FSM.
A premium has also been introduced for children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces.
The targeted and strategic use of pupil premium will support us in achieving Oasis Academy Lister Park’s vision to enable all students to reach their full academic potential. In order to achieve this we have set out the following principles for use of the pupil premium funding.
Our Principles
- We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all of the pupils
- We ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, this includes ensuring that the needs of socially disadvantaged pupils are adequately assessed and addressed
- In making provision for socially disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged
- We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil, or groups of pupils, the school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged
- Pupil premium funding will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals
Provision
The Academy Council & Academy Leadership Team (ALT) may consider the following range of provision for this group:
- One to One and small group tuition
- Inclusion in enrichment activities including school trips & visits
- Provision of Lap-top PCs to support individual students where the need is clearly identified
- Additional curriculum support from targeted resources in identified subjects where required improvement has been identified
- Individual support for students identified from pastoral teams knowledge and individual student interviews and family liaison
- Student support from external organisations e.g. motivational programmes
- Increased access to school counsellors to support emotional and mental health
- Increased access to other specialist support services e.g. CAMS, Outreach
- Support with transport to school where identified from family liaison and individual student meetings
- Increased support for Literacy & Numeracy
- Student access to a nominated ‘Mentor’ of their choice within school, to support and coach the student with a view to enabling the student to reach their potential
- Peer support programmes as required
- Staff CPD activity.
All our work through the pupil premium will be aimed at accelerating progress to move children to at least age related expectations.
Reporting
It will be the responsibility of the Principal, or a delegated member of staff, to include the following information in the annual data report for the Academy Council:
- The progress made towards narrowing the gap, by year group, for socially disadvantaged pupils
- An outline of the provision that was made since the last annual report
- An evaluation of the cost effectiveness, in terms of the progress made by the pupils receiving a particular provision, when compared with other forms of support
At the end of the academic year, the Academy Council will ensure that there is an annual statement to parents on how the Pupil Premium funding has been used to address the issue of ‘narrowing the gap’, for socially disadvantaged pupils. This statement will be prepared alongside the ‘Link Council Member’ for Pupil Premium. This task will be carried out within the requirements published by the Department for Education. This policy will be reviewed annually.
Pupil Premium is spent within the context of the overall funding agreement between the DfE and Oasis Community Learning.
